Spellbound Concerto
Comp: Miklós Rósza (Alfred Hitchcock-Film 1945)

June, 28, 2002, Berlin
PHILHARMONIE
European premiere of the "Spellbound Concerto" in Berlin
Orchestra of the music special school "Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach"
Conductor: Tilo Schmalenberg
Soloist: Carolina Eyck, Thereminvox

The orchestra of the music high school "Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach" Berlin invites to two uncommon concerts. As an unique education place in Berlin offers this high school an astonishing musical level.
This surprises less if one knows that each student of this school gets study-preparatory instruction through teachers of the Berlin conservatories/universities.
The yearly orchestra concert in the "Berlin Philharmonic" represents a climax of this work. In this year 2002, works of composers, who partially or as a matter of priority worked for the film, were on the program.
The name Schostakowitch may surprise in this context. This master of the newer music turned however again and again to the film music.
Distinct film composers are Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota. They worked with the most important directors and created the typical film music sound of the 70er and 80er years. From Miklós Rósza comes the music of the Hitchcock-Thriller "Spellbound“. He stipulated an uncommon and rare solo instrument - the Thereminvox, the first electronic music instrument, which was invented approximately 1920.
The composer Miklós Rósza wrote from the topics of his film music the "Spellbound concerto" for Thereminvox solo, string instruments, oboe and piano. For this orchestra concert, Jan Bilk supplemented the score about a contrabass voice.
In our concert, the Thereminvox is played by Carolina Eyck. She is schoolgirl of the music high school "Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach" in the subjects viola, piano and theory/hearing formation.
